Manufactured c. the 19th century. The outer lid is marked "Beware he/who steals from me". The mechanism appears to be actuated by attaching a chain on the sear to the hook on the lid which drops the hammer on the percussion cap, sounding the alarm.

Fair with traces of original finish in protected areas, an attractive aged patina on the metal otherwise. The chain appears to be too short, but functions when tested by hand.
