Description:

Marked "CPl GEO. R. MAXWELL" with an American flag and a flying eagle with a "FIRST MICH. CAVALRY 1862" marked ribbon in its beak. George R. Maxwell was a became a General during the Civil War. He served in the First Michigan Cavalry and fought in major battles, including Gettysburg. His military service left him with severe injuries of a lost a leg and a useless arm. After his service he later became a federal marshal in Utah Territory where he believed religious law superseded federal law. He lost his life after battling a long illness on July 2nd, 1889. With a copy of "Gettysburg to Great Salt Lake : George R. Maxwell, Civil War hero and federal marshal among the Mormons" .
