Grouping of Medals and Insignia Attributed to Captain Oliver E. Liggitt, Chaplain of the First Special Service Force

The grouping includes a pair of dog tags marked for Liggitt (which include a next of kin listing for J. Walter Liggitt of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), two sets of silver Captain's bars, a pair of gold bullion wire "crossed arrow" insignia on a single OD green cloth patch, a pair of "U.S." lapel pins, one "crucifix over crossed arrows" chaplain's insignia, "red arrowhead" First Special Service Force patch, 1st SSF lapel pin, a "bowie knife" patch, and a miniature medal bar featuring the American Defense Medal with Foreign Service Clasp, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with Star, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with Star and Arrowhead, World War II Victory Medal, and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal. Two photographs are included of a chaplain at work, standing at a lectern in one and handing out communion in the other; the lectern picture shows the chaplain wearing a fourrage cord in the style of the 1st SSF and identical "crucifix over crossed arrows" insignia to the one seen in this lot, and the communion picture has a technician with fourrage cord and a mix of American and Canadian troopers receiving communion. Information on Captain Liggitt is limited; newspaper records of the period identify him as a second generation Protestant minister, with newspapers from Montana in 1942 identifying him as performing Protestant services for the First SSF during their initial formation and training period. It is unknown how far Captain Liggitt went with the Special Service Force, but the included medals would place him with the formation through several of their milestones, including their initial deployment to the Aleutian Islands and action in Europe. Consignor information states that Liggitt is named in the book "The Devil's Brigade" by Adleman and Miller. Provenance: The Putnam Green/Sycamore Collection

ConditionGood overall, with mild wear. The bowie knife patch shows creasing and wear, and minor stains are present on the medal ribbons.
