Description:

1) NCO uniform set, consisting of a wool tunic and a twill shirt. The tunic is outfitted with brass buttons, a set of round "US" and "winged propeller" badges on the collar, a Staff Sergeant insignia on the left sleeve below a white-on-black "50" aviation patch, and an insignia consisting of a black letter "A" over a person with a stick on the left shoulder. A label for De-Luxe of New York is present on the interior. The "50" patch appears to be from No.50 Squadron of the Royal Flying Corps. Fine, with some holes and absent buttons. 2) 1st Lieutenant's tunic and trouser set, both twill construction. The tunic shows "U.S. and "winged propeller" devices on the collar, a set of silver plated bars on the shoulders, a set of Royal Flying Corps and U.S. Junior Aviator flight wings on the right and left breasts, respectively, and 2 service chevrons at the left cuff. A tailor tag for Sigmund Eisner of New Jersey is present below the collar, and "BRADLEY LAWTON" is signed inside the left shoulder. Consignor notes indicate Lawton as an Army Air Corps aviator, assigned to the 209th Squadron of the Royal Air Force and the American 17th Pursuit Squadron, with records noting Lawton as injured and requiring hospitalization while serving with the latter unit in July of 1918. A number of American aviators and ground crewmen were seconded to the air forces of other members of the Entente Powers, including Great Britain, as a form of in-field training before forming up into full American units. Fair, with verdigris around the buttons and pins, some detached parts, and mild wear and fraying. Provenance: The Putnam Green/Sycamore Collection
