Description:

1) Framed fabric pennant, 19 3/8" long, marked "AIR SERVICE/(American roundel)/U.S. ARMY/1/9/1/8/C.J.W.". Consignor notes suggest the material is salvaged balloon fabric, and "C.J.W." is Camp John Wise, Texas, home of an Air Service balloonist school. 2) Framed aircraft insignia, painted fabric featuring a standing buffalo, matted with a 20" diameter visible area. A photocopied note attached to the back states that the insignia was taken from Middletown Air Deport by a J. Duncan Campbell in 1933; aircraft were sent to Middletown for refurbishment, which involved removing and then burning their old fabric skins, and Campbell had permission from the base CO to take insignia from the cut off fabric. All are in good condition, with some flaking or cracking appropriate to age and wear. Provenance: The Putnam Green/Sycamore Collection
