Description:

Established in 1910 and reorganized in 1916, the Deutsche Luftstreitkraefte was the air unit of the Imperial German Army during World War I. Originally invested mainly in reconnaissance and observation work, the service would embrace fighter aircraft during the war, producing some of the most famous names in combat aviation in the process. Formed in 1916, Jagdstaffel I was one of Germany's first dedicated fighter squadrons, equipped with Fokker biplanes and monoplanes, and credited with 107 confirmed air to air victories (138 claimed) during the war. Included with the tunic is a set of correspondence between Adrian Forman and Norm Flayderman; Forman is a noted author on German decorations, and as the namesake creator of "Flayderman's Guide", Flayderman requires little introduction. The correspondence relates to Flayderman's acquisition of this tunic from Forman, and a request by Flayderman to have a research document forwarded to him. The document (included) is a letter to Forman from the Institute of Orders Researches in Berlin, which identifies this item to Jagdstaffel I. External construction is green cloth with yellow piping, with a red-on-gray "I/3" patch on the left sleeve, silver "EXTRA FEIN" marked crown buttons, and a set of two Oberleutnant shoulder boards with yellow piping, single pips and winged propeller badges. The interior is lined with a combination of pale suede, yellow felt and gray herringbone, with a set of Christian Schwartz & Son (Munich) tags, one below the collar (heavily worn) and one inside the left breast pocket. The pocket tag is dated "24.4.1915" and signed "Liebrecht". Also included with the tunic is an aviator cap, brown leather exterior with a fur-lined interior, light padding in the forehead area, covered ear holes, and no visible maker's marks. Tunic is fine, with minor wear/holes, cap is fair with wear and staining. Provenance: Norm Flayderman; The Putnam Green/Sycamore Collection
