Two Antique Derringers

A) Hopkins & Allen XL Derringer

Manufactured circa 1870s with a total quantity estimated at 2000. Top barrel flat marked "XL DERRINGER" and "PAT. APR. 5, 1870" on the upper left flat. Although the derringer does not bear Hopkins and Allen markings, it does appear in their advertising literature. The patent date is for the Marlin Ejector used on the derringer and for which a royalty was likely paid to Marlin. Iron frame and fitted with bird head grips. Nickel finished and casehardened hammer and trigger.

ConditionVery good. Overall the derringer has a smooth brown-gray patina with a heavy concentration of original nickel finish on the breech end of the barrel. There is some scattered minor pitting. The grips are slightly undersized at the frame, otherwise the grips are very good with high point wear. Action does not function.
