Pennsylvania Full Length Percussion Rifle

Fixed sights on a barrel marked "LANCASTER PA" with a crudely restamped name (possibly J. F. Ortney). The lock plate has a partial marking: "OLCHER" (likely for Golcher). In AMERICAN GUNSMITH, firearms expert Frank Sellers lists several Golchers who worked in Pennsylvania. The trigger guard, crescent buttplate (engraved), ramrod pipes, reverse plate, and forend cap are brass. The wedge escutcheons, thumb shield, and eagle overlay on the cheekpiece are German silver. Double set triggers and full length stock with crude carving on wrist.

ConditionFair. The rifle has a smooth brown-gray patina with some scattered minor pitting and spotting. There is minor flash pitting that extends to the lock. The brass is fine. The stock is fine with a small minor crack near the lock, a couple missing minor chips and some minor handling marks. The hammer is loose and the adjustable trigger screw is missing.
