Rare Walther First Model Zero Series P.38 Pistol with Concealed Extractor and History

This is a rare original example of First year production First Model Walther Zero Series P.38 pistol with history. This rare Sub-Variation 1, Zero Series P.38 Pistol has a concealed extractor, rectangular firing pin, high polish blue finish and black plastic grips with checkered panels. The left side of the slide is roll-stamped with the Walther Banner followed by the model designation "P.38" and the serial number "0947". The right side of the slide is stamped with the Eagle and Swastika Army proofmark flanked by "Eagle/359" Army Acceptance marks. The serial number is roll-stamped on the left side of the frame above the trigger guard bow and on the front of the barrel lug. The last three digits of the serial number, "947", are stamped on the bottom of the locking block. All of the serial numbers match. The "E/359" Army acceptance mark is stamped on nearly every component. The pistol comes with one replacement blued magazine with "E/359"on the spine and a second blued replacement magazine stamped on the spine with the acceptance mark "WaA/708" and the maker's code "jvc". Neither magazine is serial numbered. The pistol is complete with a history and photographs of the Army officer who captured it. The pistol was captured from a German officer by LT. Leslie S. Bigelow. Lieutenant Bigelow was a Platoon Leader in the anti-tank gun section of Hq. Co., 3rd Bn., 335th Infantry Regt., 84th Infantry Division ("Rail Splitters"). The 84th Division fought in four campaigns during WWII: (1) Siegfried Line (Nov.-Dec. 1944), (2) Ardennes (Dec. 1944-Jan.1945), (3) Rohr/Rhine (Feb-March 1945) and (4) Rhine-Elbe (April-May 1945). Only 1000 Sub-Variation 1, Zero Series P.38 Pistols were manufactured. These pistols had a high attrition rate during WWII and original examples of First Model Zero Series P.38 Pistols are very rare.

ConditionExcellent. The pistol is original and retains 90% of the original high polish blue finish. The barrel has light pitting at the top and holster wear at the muzzle. The finish is thin on the grip strap and there is edge wear on high points of the trigger guard and frame. There is considerable finish wear on the top and right side of the slide and some minor spotting on the left side of the slide. All of the markings are crisp. The black plastic grips are in very good overall condition with light to moderate handling wear. Both magazines have moderate handling wear and retain 80% of the original blue finish. This is an excellent example of a rare and very desirable First Model Zero Series Walther P.38 pistol with documented capture history.
