Wooden Mold for Antique Cannon Production

Produced from hardwood, wooden mock-ups such as this one were used in the making of cannons via the "sand casting" method, where a 1 to 1 scale wood dummy would be prepared with the desired dimensions, and placed into a chamber packed with damp sand, which would retain it's shape after the dummy was removed, creating a cavity into which molten metal is then poured. This example is split down the center vertically, with separate pieces for the roundels, touchhole area and muzzle. Dimensions are 31 inches long, 10 inches wide, with 3 inches thick roundels. Consignor notes attribute this mold to a Civil War-era foundry.

ConditionVery fine. Some long cracks are visible, along with pressure dents and scratches.
