Scarce U.S. Model 1865 Springfield First Model Allin Conversion

One of 5000 Model 1861 percussion rifle-muskets converted by Springfield Armory to breech-loading .58 caliber rimfire rifles. The First Model Allin Conversion rifles are the first and most desirable of the .58 caliber 'trapdoor' conversions. The barrel has a bright finish, the breechblock receiver and single leaf rear sight had the black oil quenched finish and the hammer and lock plate are casehardened. The stock is oil-finished black walnut. The lock plate is dated "1865" behind the hammer and marked with the Eagle and Shield motif followed by "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD" ahead of it. The tang has a partial "64", "1864" date and faint eagle head markings from the original rifle-musket. The tang of the buttplate is stamped with "US". There is a very faint oval cartouche on the left stock flat. Manufactured in relatively limited numbers, the Model 1865 First Allin Conversion Rifles saw hard service and are rarely encountered in fine or better condition. Complete with an iron tulip head ramrod and Springfield Armory museum tag numbered "SA032".

ConditionVery fine. The barrel is mostly a smooth silver gray patina. The barrel bands, buttplate and trigger guard have a gray patina with some minor pitting. There are a few tool marks on the left side, breech end of the barrel. The breechblock, lock and hammer have the correct smooth dark oil quenched black with some of the casehardening pattern remaining on the breech block and lock. The stock is also very fine with a few scattered minor dents and dings. The markings are clear. The mechanics are excellent.
