Developed by Hiram Maxim, the Maxim Gun was the first commercially successful machine gun, being adopted by, among others, the British, Germans and Russians. Among the Russian forces, the Maxim saw use in both World Wars, equipped with the Sokolov Mount, a wheeled carriage with ballistic shield. Fitted with a ribbed cooling jacket, left-offset blade and staff sights, wooden "spade" profile grips, and the Sokolov Mount, minus ballistic shield, metal construction with green paint finish. At some point the upper receiver cover was replaced with one bearing markings from Finland, suggesting that this arm changed hands at least once during the various conflicts between the two nations.
