This is an example of a Model 2 Colt "Root" revolver manufactured in 1855, the first year of production. The top barrel flat is marked "COLT'S PT. / 1855" followed by "ADDRESS COL. COLT / HARTFORD CT U.S.A." with the pointing finger and Maltese crosses. The cylinder is roll engraved with the Cabin and Indian fight scene and marked "COLT'S PATENT / No 817. All blue finish with casehardened hammer and loading lever, and fitted with a smooth one piece walnut grip. Matching serial number on the butt, barrel and cylinder. Complete in a wooden case with velvet lining, eagle shield flask, brass two cavity bullet mold with the sprue marked "COLT'S / PATENT", an unopened Goldmark's percussion cap tin and approximately 15 round lead balls.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel and cylinder have a smooth gray patina with some minor flash pitting on the cylinder. The frame retains 40% original blue finish mixed with smooth gray patina. The loading lever has a smooth silver gray and the hammer a smooth dark patina. The grip is fine with half of the original varnish, some lower edge wear and some minor dents and dings. The cylinder scene is 95% visible and the barrel markings are crisp and clear. The action is fine. The case is good with a minor crack in the lid, a repaired crack on the bottom (some time ago) and a few minor dents and dings. The lining is faded, shows some contact wear and is split where the repair was done to the bottom. The flask and mold are very good.
