H. Goedeke Olney, Illinois, Marked Percussion Half Stock Rifle with Decoration

Fixed sights, with the top barrel flat marked "H. GOEDEKE OLNEY, ILLS". Henry Goedeke is listed in Frank Sellers' book AMERICAN GUNSMITHS as working in Olney, Illinois, from 1873 to 1928. the lock plate has a game bird scene behind the hammer and is marked "DAYTON" under the bolster. The hammer has a scroll engraving. Brass crescent buttplate and trigger guard, with double set triggers. Half stock with checkered wrist, pewter forend cap, painted deer on the cheekpiece which is on the left side of the buttstock and painted English setter on the right side of the buttstock. These paintings most definitely rate as American Folk art!

ConditionGood. The barrel and action have a mottled gray patina with some scattered minor spotting. The wood is good with some minor dings and scratches with a series of gouges on the left side of the forearm and a crudely repaired large chip near the upper tang. Half of the painted deer remains with most of the painted dog remaining. There are a few minor nicks in the overall crisp checkering.
