White is listed in Frank Sellers' AMERICAN GUNSMITHS as having work in Jackson, Ohio, Olney, Illinois, and Yankton, South Dakota and specialized in percussion half stocks. Barrel gauges at approximately .45 caliber. Fixed sights with an open dovetail sight slot directly behind the front blade sight. Equipped with a tang peep sight. Solid iron rib on the underside of the barrel, two barrel wedges, bird game engraved lock plate, and brass tipped wooden ramrod. Smooth half stock with pewter forend cap, patch box, and crescent buttplate.

Top barrel flat is marked "F. LEATHERMAN", with blade front and adjustable rear (missing elevator) sights. There is an open dovetail sight slot just behind the rear sight. Barrel gauges at approximately .40 caliber. Unmarked lock plate, double set triggers and scroll trigger guard. Smooth half stock with single barrel wedge, patch box (right side) and crescent buttplate. In AMERICAN GUNSMITHS, Frederick Leatherman is listed as a Dayton, Ohio, gunsmith who worked from 1850 to 1900.
