One of approximately 6,000 manufactured by Remington of which 5,000 were purchased by the U.S. government. The pistol has a 8-inch blued barrel, casehardened frame with distinctive 'hump' on the back strap and oil-finished walnut grip and forearm. The hammer and breechblock are finished bright. The left side of the frame is marked " REMINGTON'S ILION N.Y. U.S.A. / PAT MAY 3D NOV 15TH 1864 APRIL 17TH 1866" in two lines and stamped with a "P" and "S". The script initials of the Ordnance inspector "C.R.S." are enclosed in a rectangle on the left side of the grip. The forearm has checkered panels. Photographed on the top of page 331 of the WM. M.
