Desirable U.S. Navy Inspected Remington Model 1865 Navy Rolling Block Pistol

U.S. Navy contract Remington Model 1865 Rolling Block Pistol. This pistol is one of approximately 6,500 rolling block pistols manufactured for the U.S. Navy between 1866 and 1870. It has the distinctive spur trigger found only on Model 1865 pistols, blued, 8 1/2-inch, round barrel, casehardened frame, breechblock, trigger and hammer and oil finished walnut forearm and one-piece grip. The top of the barrel is stamped with the U.S. Navy anchor inspection mark and the proof and inspection marks "P/F.W.C." are stamped on the lower right side of the frame. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "REMINGTONS ILION N.Y. U.S.A./PAT. MAY 3D NOV 15th 1864 APRIL 17th 1866". The serial number, "4558" is stamped on the underside of the barrel in front of the forearm. The inspectors script initials "FCW" are stamped in a rectangle on the lower left grip heel. The Remington Rolling Block Pistols have one of the strongest actions; the Model 1865 Navy Pistol was the first of the rolling block pistols. Most Model 1865 Navy Rolling Block Pistols were subsequently converted to Model 1867 configuration with trigger guard. Original Model 1865 Navy pistols are scarce.

ConditionFine. The pistol shows moderate wear and retains 40% of the original blue finish. The barrel has scattered, minor scratches and patches of light surface rust. The pistol frame retains traces of the original casehardened finish. The case colors have faded to a mottled silver-gray patina with traces of surface rust. The hammer and breechblock retain most of the casehardened finish and are partially covered with dried grease. The walnut grip and forearm are in very good condition with moderate handling wear and several minor chips. The U.S. Navy inspection marks on the top of the barrel and on the right side of the frame are sharp. The inspection marks on the lower left side of the grip are crisp. The action is tight and functions well. This is a fine example of a scarce U.S. Navy Model 1865 Rolling Block Pistol.
