Description:

This is a very fine Civilian production, single shot, Model 1865 Navy Rolling Block Pistol, that was manufactured by the Remington, between 1866 and 1870. It has the distinctive spur trigger which identifies it as the first of the Remington Rolling Block pistols. The pistol has a blued barrel, color casehardened frame and fancy, highly figured walnut forearm and one-piece grip. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "REMINGTONS ILION N.Y. U.S.A./PAT. MAY 3rd NOV. 15th 1864 APRIL 17th 1866". The top of the barrel is stamped with an anchor inspection mark. The pistol lacks the Naval inspector's markings on the right side of the frame, which are found on the U.S. Navy contract Model 1865 pistols. The pistol is in the original rimfire configuration and the breechblock retains the original rimfire firing pin. The Model 1865 Pistol was the first of the Remington Rolling Block Pistols. Original civilian production, rimfire examples are scarce; most Model 1865 pistols were apparently altered by the factory to Model 1867 configuration with trigger guard and were fitted with centerfire breechblocks.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel retains 95% of the original blue finish. The frame, breechblock and hammer have 70% of the original color casehardened finish with strong case colors. The hammer and breechblock pins have most of the fiery, niter blue, finish. The bore is bright and the pistol has no firing wear. The barrel and frame markings are crisp. The fancy walnut grip and forearm are both in very fine condition with some minor storage marks. Most of the high polish varnish finish remains. This is a very fine example of a scarce, civilian production Remington Model 1865 Navy Rolling Block Pistol.
