Description:

This is a very fine example of a Borchardt semi-automatic pistol that was manufactured by DWM. The Borchardt was the direct forerunner for the Luger pistol (this example was even made by the same company DWM) that featured a toggle bolt and distinctive grip in the center of the frame. The pistol has the standard rust blue finish with niter blue small parts and two-piece, European walnut, grips with finely checkered panels. The pistol is complete with a attachable walnut stock with cheek-piece, black calf-skin holster that attaches to the stock, two nickel-plated 8-round magazines with wooden bases and a wooden dummy magazine that contains two brass oilers. The top of the toggle is roll-stamped: "D.R.P./No.75887" in two lines. The right side of the receiver is roll-stamped: "SYSTEM BORCHARDT. PATENT./DEUTSCHE WAFFEN-UND MUNITIONSFABRIKEN./BERLIN" in three lines. "Crown/B", "Crown/U" and "Crown/G" German commercial proof marks are stamped on the left side of the barrel. "Crown/B" and "Crown/U" proof marks are stamped on the left side of the receiver near the chamber and on the left side of the toggle. The serial number, "1821" is stamped on the underside of the barrel just ahead of the receiver, on the upper toggle link, the left side of the trigger, the butt, the stock lug and on the base of one magazine. All of the visible serial numbers on the pistol match. The extra magazine is serial numbered "1722". The Borchardt semi-automatic pistol is beautifully made. It is historically significant as one of the first successfully semi-automatic pistols and the predecessor of the Luger pistol.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The pistol retains 90% plus of the original blue finish. The blue finish on the grip straps has faded to a dark smooth patina. There are scattered, minor, patches of surface blemishes. The trigger and other niter blue components retain about 80% of the bright fire-blue finish. The grips are in very fine condition with crisp checkering. The serial numbers, factory markings and proof marks are crisp. The bore is bright. The magazine that is serial numbered to the pistol has about 90% of the original, nickel-plated finish with some scattered flaking the body and an excellent wooden base. The spare magazine retains about 75% of the plated finish with an excellent base. The stock is also in very fine condition with minor, scattered, handling and storage marks. The stock mount retains about 85% of the blue finish. The delicate, calfskin, holster is supple with tight stitching. It retains all of the attachment straps. The leather body has the usual cracking and flex marks with some minor flaking. The wooden oiler/dummy magazine is in very good overall condition. This is a very good example of a scarce Borchardt semi-automatic pistol with the key accessories.
