Scarce U.S. Springfield Model 1903 Hoffer-Thompson 22 Long Rifle Bolt Action Gallery Rifle with Original Accessories

This is a nice example of a Hoffer-Thompson 22LR training rifle built on a Model 1903 Springfield rifle. These Hoffer-Thompson rifles were an attempt by Springfield to manufacture a 22LR training rifle that had the same size, weight and feel of the standard Model 1903 rifle. These were the predecessor to the Model 1922 series training rifles. These rifles utilized a special chamber insert dummy 30-06 cartridge with a spring loaded firing pin assembly inside. The 22LR cartridges were inserted inside the dummy cartridge and then they were loaded in the normal fashion just like a regular service rifle, and used the standard bolt and firing pin assembly. It was reported that some of these rifles were produced using receivers and parts that were out of tolerance that were stamped .22, since they only had to meet the pressures of the 22LR cartridge, with some parts marked ".22" as in this example which only has the top of the rear receiver bridge marked with a "22". This receiver was produced in 1911 and was converted in the 1920 time frame and the top of the receiver is marked "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD / ARMORY / MODEL 1903 / 448173", and the barrel is marked "SA / ordnance bomb / 4-20". The rifle has a early WWI period single bolt stock and late 1930's handguard. It has the correct milled parts, blade front sight and adjustable rear sight graduated to 2,800 yards. The stock is stamped with a large "P" directly behind the trigger guard and has a clear boxed "J.F.C." cartouche on the left side. It is complete with five of the special "Hoffer-Thompson" chamber inserts. A total of approximately 15,525 were produced and the rifle was not very successful and most were withdrawn from service and destroyed.

ConditionVery fine. The barrel and receiver retain 90% original blue finish with some flaking on the receiver. The barrel bands have a dark patina and the replaced reparkerized trigger guard and floor plate show minor spotting. The stock is fine with a few overall scattered minor dings and dents, and clear cartouche and inspection mark. Mechanically excellent. A solid example of a seldomly encountered Model 1903 variation.
