A) Japanese Type 99 Naval Special Rifle with Short Barrel

Description:

This Type 99 Naval Special last ditch rifle has a 21 5/8" barrel and is similar to the rifle pictured in Fred Honeycut's book MILITARY RIFLES OF JAPAN (page 156). These rifles with a 21 5/8" barrel are found in the 12911-13819 serial number range and are known as "Special Type 99" rifles. Fixed sights, with the receiver marked with the serial number only, bayonet lug, and lacking wrist tangs. The number "15283" is marked on the breech end of the barrel. Pistol grip stock with hardwood buttplate and lacking an upper handguard and rear tangs on the receiver.

Rating Definition:

Good. The rifle has a smooth brown patina with some areas of extensive minor to deep pitting. The roughly cut stock is very good with some minor handling marks and some chipping along the grain.

Description:

Manufactured at the Kokura Arsenal, Series 25. Fixed sights, with ground mum, no dust cover, hardwood buttplate, and bayonet lug. Smooth stock and upper handguard, with sling.

Rating Definition:

Good. The rifle retains 10% original blue finish with the balance a smooth dark patina. The sanded and reoiled wood is good with a long hairline crack near the upper tang and rear barrel band and a series of shallow gouges in the grip area, along with some minor dings, gouges and scratches. Missing the magazine spring and a trigger guard screw.
