Early Production Colt Model 1902 Military Semi-Automatic Pistol with British Proofmarks

This Colt Model 1902 Military semi-automatic pistol was manufactured in 1902. The pistol has the early, fine checkered grip panels on the forward portion of the slide and early round-top hammer. The pistol has an 8-shot magazine, slide lock, round top, dovetail mounted rear sight and swivel lanyard loop on the lower left side of the frame. Small British "Crown/V" and "Crown/P" proof and inspection marks are stamped on the left rear of the slide. This pistol reportedly is one of 25 sent to England for test trials by the British Army at Enfield and Hythe in 1903. The pistol has the Colt high polish commercial blue finish with niter blue barrel, trigger, slide lock, rear sight and grip screws. The hammer and lanyard loop have a casehardened finish. The black checkered hard rubber grips have the Rampant Colt trademark in a circle in the middle and "COLT" in a ribbon at the top. The right side of the slide has the early style marks that consist of: "AUTOMATIC COLT/CALIBRE 38 RIMLESS SMOKELESS" in two lines behind the ejection port and "MODEL 1902" between the ejection port and the grip panel. The left side of the slide is roll-stamped: "BROWNING"S PATENT"/PAT'D APRIL 20. 1897/SEPTEMBER 9, 1902" in three lines followed by "COLT'S PATENT FIREARMS MFG. CO./HARTFORD. CONN. U.S.A." and the encircled Rampant Colt trademark. The serial number "14174" is located on the left side of the slide above the trigger guard bow. The magazine has a full blue finish and is marked: "PAT'D SEPT.9.1884." on the floor plate.

ConditionVery fine. The pistol retains 90% plus of the bright original high polish blue finish. Wear is limited to numerous small spots of light pitting on the slide at the muzzle and on the frame near the spur. The frame and slide have a number of light storage scratches which are consistent with military storage marks on British Model 1911 .455 pistols. The niter blue components have 95% or more of the original finish. The hammer and lanyard loop have 95% of the vivid casehardened finish intact. Nearly all of the blue finish is present on the magazine. The grips are in very good condition with minor storage marks and some nicks and chips present around the grip screws. This is a very fine example of a first year production Colt Model 1902 Military semi-automatic pistol with early features and markings and rarely encountered British proofmarks.
