Manufactured by Charles Buss of Marlboro, N.H. circa 1855, with less than 25 produced and only 5 known to exist, including the patent model. Intended to work around Colt's patent, the cylinder is revolved by hand, with a spring loaded "U" shaped block, aka the "straddler" holding the cylinder in place. Single brass bead sight, with "CHARLES BUSS. / MARLBORO, N.H. / PATENTED / APR. 25, 1854" on the top strap, the serial number on the bottom barrel flat, and scroll leaf engraving on the barrel flats, frame and back strap. This revolver is pictured on page 26 of "American Percussion Revolvers" by Sellers and Smith, which also states that serial number 17 is the highest known example.

Good with a gray patina overall, mild handling marks and some light scattered pin prick pitting. Grips are very good as lightly sanded and reoiled, with a minor fill repair around the escutcheon on the right side and light overall handling marks. The action does not function and the hammer won't cock. Writer can not recall ever handling one of these. Very rare!
