Description:

Model 1816 flintlock musket manufactured by the Springfield Armory in 1829. This 'Type 2' musket has a browned barrel, barrel bands, trigger guard, side plate and buttplate with casehardened lock and hammer. The lock features a removable brass pan. The lower sling swivel is located on the trigger guard bow. The, oil-finished, black walnut, stock has the characteristic low comb found on Model 1816 muskets. The lock plate is marked: "SPRING/FIELD/1829" in three vertical lines behind the hammer and is stamped with a small Eagle/Shield motif over "US" in front of the hammer. The barrel tang is dated "1826". The upper left side of the barrel is stamped with "LS", "US" inspection and property marks over a "P" proofmark. "S" assembler's marks are stamped on the side plate and barrel bands. There are four small notches on the inside of the barrel tang and three slash marks on the tang inlet in the stock. Two large Ordnance inspection marks consisting of three script initials in an oval are stamped on the left stock flat. A smaller, oval, two-letter inspection mark is stamped on the bottom of the stock behind the trigger guard finial. A rack number, "31" is stamped on the right side of the stock ahead of the buttplate and "1" is stamped on the opposite side of the stock. "US" is stamped on the top of the buttplate. The Model 1816 Flintlock Musket was the primary weapon of the U.S. infantry during the Mexican War. After the adoption of percussion ignition systems most Model 1816 Type 2 and Type 3 were converted to percussion. Model 1816 muskets in original flintlock configuration are scarce.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The musket retains 75% of the original brown 'dragon's blood' finish. The casehardened lock, hammer and frizzen have a dark gray patina. The barrel has no flash pitting and appears to be original. The hammer and frizzen have light flash pitting; the inside of the lock plate is clean and the parts retain the original fire blue and bright finish. The markings on the barrel and lock plate are crisp. The stock also remains in very fine condition; the edges of the stock flats and barrel channels are sharp and most of the original oil finish is intact. The stock inspection marks are deep and legible. The button head ramrod is too long for the musket and an obvious replacement. The musket appears to be in original configuration. This is a fine example of a key U.S. Army shoulder arm.
