Description:

This original Wells Fargo wooden crate measures approximately 20 inches across, 10 inches high and 12 inches deep. There is an iron band around the edge of the lid, iron corner protectors on the bottom, iron hinges and reinforcing straps. The crate is painted green with stenciled "WELLS FARGO / & CO" on the front. On each side is the remnant of a sticker, one from the Railway Express Agency. There were leather carrying straps on each side. The padlock is a vintage iron and rivet constructed Colt padlock with the original key. The front of the lock has a brass plaque marked "COLT / FIREARMS / FACTORY / 51" and there is a brass plate that covers the keyhole.

Rating Definition:

The crate is fair with numerous chunks of wood absent from the edges, some pretty good sized exposing the nails. The iron is pitted and the left rear corner protector is loose. There is a large crack across the back of the lid and the bottom, and several other moderate cracks. Most of the green paint remains and the stenciling on the front is clear, (the top line has been redone at some time). Overall the crate remains solid. The reproduction padlock is good with some minor oxidation and a dark aged patina on the brass. We are unsure as to the authenticity, so will offer these items as is.
