Extraordinary DWM U.S. Army Model 1900 Test Luger Pistol with U.S. Holster, Magazine Pouch, Case and Accessories

This extraordinary DWM Model 1900 American Eagle Luger manufactured by DWM in 1901 as part of an order for 1000 pistols by the Army for troop tests with the U.S. Cavalry. The serial number of this pistol, No. 7168, is listed on page 387 of "U.S. MILITARY AUTOMATIC PISTOLS" by Edward S. Meadows as one of the recording surviving examples of Model 1900 U.S. military test Lugers. This exact pistol is described and photographed on page 52-53 of Luger: The Multi-National Pistol by Charles Kenyon / Richard Ellis Publications. The pistol is complete with: (1) russet leather full-flap holster manufactured by Rock Island Arsenal for the Model 1900 Test Eagle Lugers, (2) russet leather, three pocket magazine pouch with two tin plated magazines with wood bases and (3) black leather, luggage-type case with green felt lining (the case is almost identical to the presentation case illustrated on page 527 of "LUGER HOLSTERS AND ACCESSORIES" by Eugene Bender). The case has compartments for two magazines, a box of cartridges, cleaning rod, tool and punch. The case contains a carton of 50 7.65mm cartridges with English label, combination cleaning rod/oiler with brass shaft, a punch, tool and two plated magazines with wood bases. The pistol has a rust blue finish with straw colored trigger, lock bolt, magazine release, thumb safety lever, toggle lock and extractor. The "safe" position for the safety lever is polished bright. The stocks are walnut with fine checkering. The magazine has a plated finish and un-marked wooden base. The pistol has the distinctive Model 1900 grip safety, dished toggle with lock on the right knob and flat top breech block. The United States crest is stamped on the top of the chamber and the script "DWM" monogram is stamped on the toggle lock. The pistol has commercial serial numbers with the full serial number, "7168", located on the front of the frame and underside of the barrel. Two digit serial "68" is visible on the left side of the lock bolt and the rear toggle. The magazines are correctly not serial numbered. The holster has "US" embossed in an oval on the flap. The back of the holster lacks the "ROCK ISLAND/ARSENAL/EHS" markings found on many Test Eagle holsters. The magazine pouch has a closure strap sewn on the center magazine compartment, a brass closure final riveted to flap and two sewn belt loops. See Meadows book "U.S. Military Holsters & Pistol Cartridge Boxes" on pages 412-413 for discussion of three magazine pouches for the U.S. Cavalry. The leather and stitching are very similar to the holster. The pouch is not marked.

ConditionNear new. The pistol retains 99%+ of the original rust blue and straw finish as well as nearly all of the niter blue on the front sight, sear bar spring and stock screws. The stocks are in excellent condition with sharp checkering. The only visible wear is a 1/2-inch oval indentation on the right stock where the checkering has been flattened (by a holster stud). The United States Eagle crest and DWM monogram are crisp. All five magazines are in excellent condition. The rare Test Eagle holster is in excellent condition; the leather is not age or oil darkened and is smooth with only minor flex marks on the top of the flap and belt loop. The "US" embossing on the flap is crisp and all of the stitching is tight. The magazine pouch which is a reissue type for cavalry is in the same excellent condition; wear is limited to some minor scuff marks on the top of the flap and some flexing on the closure strap. The exterior of the presentation case is in very good condition with minor handling wear on the lower edges and corners. The interior is in very fine condition; the green felt lining remains bright and shows only very minor oil stains and compression marks and a small rip in the fabric opposite the front sight. The cartridge box is in fine condition and the tools are excellent with minimal wear. This is an exceptional example of a U.S. Army Model 1900 Test Luger Pistol with very rare "US" holster, extra magazines, cartridge pouch presentation case and accessories.
