Very Large, Historical Extremely Rare - Early Civil War "Presentation for Valor" Anna Pottery Pig Flask Sow Circa 1863

Extremely rare massive, museum quality stoneware pig flask with incised eyes and large snout and red cold polychrome paint to accent the mouth. This is a very large flask, the height 4 1/2", Length 9 1/4", Width 3 1/4". (It is also rare in that it is a sow, rather than a boar). Incised on the top and right side of the pig is:Col. W.K. M. Breckinridge/ Keeps Good Brandy in a Hogs" ending near the rear of the pig. The underbelly of the sow is incised with "Anna Pottery Ills". The history of Colonel W. K. M Breckinridge, as reported by his superior in a letter dated May 14, 1863. Colonel Breckinridge made a surprise early morning attack on an a Rebel encampment that had been successfully picking off Union Soldiers and disrupting any advancement. Colonel Breckinridge arrived in Linden at the crack of dawn and took the Rebels by surprise only 20 of the 118 rebel Pickets fired upon him before the encampment was completely surrounded. Colonel Breckinridge returned with 1 Captain, 4 Lieutenants, 1 Sergeon, 20 regular Rebel soldiers, 10 Conscripts, 50 horses, 2 transportation wagons, arms and supplies. The Union solders loss no one, the only casualty was one horse. In the letter Colonel Breckinridge's superior is recommending him for a promotion to over see the First West Tennessee Cavalry Regiment. To commemorate Colonel Breckinridge of his accomplishments this pig flask was presented in his honor.

ConditionThe pig flask is in excellent condition, totally original condition overall. An extraordinary piece of Civil War, associated history mixed with the huge desirability factor of just purely being an extremely rare Anna Pottery Pig Flask!
