Ketland Flintlock Musket with Maple Stock

Marked "T/ KETLAND / & CO" on the lock plate. This firm operated in Birmingham, England from just after the Revolutionary War until the death of one of the partners, John Ketland, in 1816. John and Thomas Ketland were the sons of Thomas Ketland and grandsons of William Ketland, who had been making locks and guns for the colonies since the early 18th century. There are no visible Birmingham proofmarks at the rear of the barrel. Brass mountings, bayonet lug on the bottom of the barrel, integral iron flash pan, button head iron ramrod and mounted with an American full maple stock with brass end cap and ill-fitting brass buttplate.

ConditionVery good. The barrel has a dark brown patina with overall minor oxidation. The remaining iron surfaces have a dark patina and the brass shows a natural aged patina. The stock is also very good with some overall scattered minor dents, dings and scratches. As noted above the buttplate is ill-fitting, the toe extends about a 1/4" past the wood. The action needs work, as it does not function very well. A very attractive colonial made/assembled English Pattern musket!
