Description:

This is a fine example of a Volcanic No.1 Pocket Pistol that was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co., circa 1857 to 1860. The pistol has the distinctive small brass frame, blued octagon barrel with integral magazine, loading lever with finger hole, casehardened hammer and two-piece varnished walnut grips. The barrel has an iron front sight blade and a fixed iron rear sight is mounted in the frame dovetail. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the one-line legend utilized by the New Haven Arms Co., after the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company was reorganized by Oliver Winchester in April 1857: "NEWHAVEN CONN. PATENT FEB.14.1854". The serial number, "1420" is stamped on the lower left side of the receiver underneath the grips and on the inside of both grips. Total production of the No.1 Pocket Pistol with 3 1/2 inch barrel is estimated at 850 pistols.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel has a crisp deep brown patina with approximately 50% of the original blue finish strongest in protected areas. The barrel has only some surface scratches in the edges and some scattered spotting. The receiver is in very good condition and has a mellow age patina. The side plate joints are in perfect condition with only collector type handling marks. The hammer and lever have an attractive brown patina. Flashes of the original casehardened finish remain on the sides of the hammer. The grips have been revarnished but remains in in very good condition. Mechanically functions, but needs a trigger spring. The barrel legend and serial numbers are sharp and crisp. This is a solid example of a historically significant New Haven Arms Co., Volcanic lever action No.1 pocket pistol.
