1947 Schwinn Whizzer Power Cycle Truck with Delivery Basket

The Whizzer motorized bicycle engine was first produced in 1939 by a Los Angeles based manufacturer of airplane parts. The company was sold in 1942. In 1943 Whizzer Motors was forced to lobby the U.S. Government for the right to continue production based on the premise that they provided a way for defense workers to travel back and forth to work. In 1948, Whizzer sold its first pre-assembled motorized bicycle, the Pacemaker. Whizzer motorcycle engines ceased production in 1965 due to the increasingly competitive bicycle engine market. It is assumed that these 5 Whizzer units are in working order, but no steps have been taken to authenticate their functionability. This black unit has gold pin striping and red Schwinn lettering with an argent silver gas tank and primary drive belt cover and a 150 pound capacity basket measuring 16 inches by 24 inches. According to consignor information, this unit is pictured on page 16-17 of the Winter 1988 issue of Vintage Motor Bike Club magazine (included), was restored in the early 1980s, entered in an Antique Auto Club of America meet in October 1985 and garnered its first junior award there. In August 1986 it took first place in the Grand National Meet and has since taken first place in three other shows it was entered in. The frame was produced by the Schwinn Bicycle Company as a Model S-3 for use in grocery, manufacturing and other types of delivery and fitted with a Whizzer new old stock Model H series bolt on motor kit with 2204W on the base of the cylinder jug and serial number H55124 on the left, high rise handlebars, tan Mesinger spring type seat, dual lever throttle and compression release controls, and drive belt engage/release and front brake levers, flex tube exhaust and a Tillotson carburetor.

ConditionExcellent plus as restored with newer Goodyear tires. Some very minor storage and handling marks. The consignor reports that there is less than 4 hours on the motor.
