Description:

The 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment is most known for their famous defense of Little Round top at the battle of Gettysburg on July, 2 1863. Col. Chamberlin whose signature is accompanied in this lot ordered the company to fix bayonets and charge down the hill defending it from the advancing confederate attack. The charge down Little Round Top is one of the most well documented and famous action that took place at the battle of Gettysburg. 1) Civil War drum with 16 inch diameter and 16 inches high. The side of the drum has an inscribed brass plaque: "Michael Quimby/Co F 20th/Maine Vol. Inf./carried by him at/Gettysburg and/donated in his memory." According to the included military records, Michael Quimby was mustered into the Union Army on December 12, 1861 at the age of 18. He was assigned as a private to Co. 1 2nd Reg. Maine Inf. and was a musician by January 1862. He was transferred to the 20th Maine Reg. Vol. Inf. on May 20, 1863 by order of Gen. Meade as a musician. The records indicate that Quimby was "absent sick since June 16, 1863" and on July 10, 1863 he was transferred from Gettysburg Ward K, Bed No. 81 to Satterlee U.S.A. General Hospital, West Philadelphia, PA, with lower back pain ("lumbago") and transferred to U.S.A Conval. Hospital, Philadelphia to recover ("convalescent"). He is shown returning to the 20th in March/April 1864 and later assigned to City Park Hospital until he was discharged in December 1864. In good condition. An area of skin has been replaced on the top and the bottom skin is torn. Has original tugs but the rope ties have been replaced. 2) 20th Maine Infantry medal. 3) Signature Col. Chamberlain of the 20th Maine dated Sept. 10, 1863. Professionally framed and matted with a print of Chamberlain leading his troops at Little Round Top during the Battle of Gettysburg. 4) 1991 reprint of John J. Pullen's book THE TWENTIETH MAINE"
