Scarce Colt Model 1860 Army Revolver with Fluted Cylinder

This Colt Model 1860 Army revolver was manufactured in 1860. The revolver has the scarce fluted cylinder and early four-screw frame with shoulder stock cuts in the recoil shield. The bottom of the back strap is notched for a shoulder stock. The revolver has the Colt, high-polish, commercial blue finish on the barrel and cylinder. The loading lever, frame and hammer are color casehardened. The brass trigger guard and iron back strap have a silver-plated finish. The one-piece walnut grip is varnished. The barrel has a nickel-silver front sight blade and is roll stamped with the one-line legend: "-ADDRESS SAML COLT HARTFORD CT.-". "COLTS/PATENT" is stamped in two lines on the left side of the frame. "PATENTED SEPT. 10th 1850" is stamped in one cylinder flute. The full serial number "540" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, the wedge, the cylinder arbor pin, frame, trigger guard and back strap. "540" is stamped in one cylinder flute. All of the visible serial numbers match. Colt manufactured only about 4000 Model 1860 Army revolvers with fluted cylinders; examples with and amount of original finish are scarce.

ConditionVery fine. The revolver retains 50% of the original high polish blue and color casehardened finish. The barrel has some scattered pitting near the muzzle. The cylinder face and percussion nipples have light flash pitting. The safety pins are battered. The hammer has some light flash pitting. The stock screws on the frame appear to be replacements. Most of the silver-plated finish is present on the trigger guard and back strap. The grip is in very good condition with 30% of the varnish finish; aside from the finish loss the grip has minimal handling wear. The serial numbers, barrel, frame and cylinder markings are sharp. The action is tight and functions well. This is a very fine example of a scarce, first year production, Colt Model 1860 Army revolver with fluted cylinder.
