Description:

Manufactured by Robbins and Lawrence at their Windsor, Vermont, factory circa 1850 to 1851. It is believed that less than 1,000 of all variations were made, despite an original order for 5,000. This particular variation was an original breech loading, single shot, factory converted or made from Jennings Repeating Rifle parts. The rifle utilized a "Rocket Ball" cartridge which was loading through the right side of the frame. A ring trigger operates the breech and automatic pill primer device. This example has no visible maker markings. The top of the barrel at the breech and top of the buttplate have a light scroll engraving. The rifle has been converted to a muzzle loading rifle. Note that many of these original breech loading rifles were later altered by local gunsmiths to muzzle loading. Smooth straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate and a blank silver initial oval on the left side. The development of the Jennings rifle brought together the talents of Henry, Horace Smith and Daniel Wesson. These men would ultimately achieve great historic developments in lever action repeating firearms. Also of note is the firm's foreman, B. Tyler Henry, who would go on to play a major role in the development of the rifle and ammunition for the Volcanic, New Haven and Winchester arms firms. Only recently has Jennings Rifles received significant historical studies.

Rating Definition:

Good as period modified (see above). The rifle has a smooth dark brown patina with an area of minor flash type pitting. The stock is very good as reoiled with some scattered minor handling marks. The wooden ramrod is broken off in the ramrod pipe. Action needs work as it does not always function.
