Gold and Silver Banded Derringer Philadelphia Percussion Pistol, with F.H. Clark (Memphis, Tennessee) Merchant Marking and Birmingham Proofs

In operation from 1841 to 1870, F.H. Clark & Company sold general merchandise, in addition to arms from Henry Derringer and Derringer's copyists. Nickel bead front sight and notch rear sight, with the top flat of the barrel marked "DERINGER/PHILADELA'' and "MANd FOR/F.H. Clark &Co./MEMPHIS, TENN.", the left side marked "P", engraved breech and tang and a set of gold and silver bands just ahead of the burst engraved bolster on the upper left flat ahead of the engraved breech, and a set of gold and silver bands ahead of the breech. On the underside, the lower left panel is numbered "163 0530", and the lower right bears a pair of Birmingham crossed scepter proofs. Though the exact chain of events in unknown, the proofs suggest that this Memphis pistol at some point made its way across the ocean and back, passing through Birmingham before its return. One-piece walnut stock, with German silver and iron furniture, engraved trigger guard and buttcap, wood ramrod and a checkered rounded grip.

ConditionGood. The Damascus-style pattern on the barrel is strong, with a moderate amount of pitting, bright edge wear and scattered handling marks. The tang, hammer and lock have turned a darker gray patina. Markings are double stamped. The silver band at the breech has turned a deep, antique patina, with lighter color on the German silver. Stock is good with a mended break in the wrist, light cracks and pressure dents. Mechanically fine.
