Fine Pre-Mexican War Militia Staff Officer's Helmet Pommel Sword with Gold-Washed Blade

High quality militia staff officer's sword c. 1820-1846. The sword has a 31 1/2 inch straight double-edged blade with fiery-blued panel and gold washed engraving. The obverse of the blade is engraved with foliate designs, an "Indian Princess" motif and a stand of arms and military trophies. The reverse is engraved with military trophies and an Eagle and Shield with "E. PLURIBUS/UNUM" in a ribbon flanked by foliate designs. The gold-plated brass hilt has a detailed helmet pommel, a reeded pearl grip and flared, pierced cross guards. The gold plated brass scabbard has two suspension rings and a frog stud. The scabbard is engraved with an Eagle and Shield motif between the suspension rings flanked by foliate designs and lightning bolts. The tip of the scabbard is engraved with foliate designs.

ConditionFine. The bright portion of the fine blade has scattered age spotting. 40% of the niter blue finish and gold wash is present on the engraved portion of the blade. The hilt retains 50% of the gold-plated finish. The pearl grip has some minor scratches and some discoloration on the reeded panels. The brass scabbard has a dark patina with traces of the gold plating in protected areas. The engraving is crisp. There are several shallow dents near the drag. This is an attractive example of a high quality militia officers sword that probably pre-dates the Mexican War (1846).
