Desirable U.S. Inspected Second Model Winchester-Hotchkiss Bolt Action Saddle Ring Carbine

This is an example of a U.S. Inspected Second Model U.S. Winchester-Hotchkiss bolt action carbine. While some of these early models were manufactured by Springfield Armory, a majority of these carbines and rifles were manufactured at Winchester. This was the first design of a repeating bolt action the U.S. government experimented with. Early attempts at adopting a bolt action were half-hearted due to Americas love for the lever action. Approximately 12,000 were used by the military. The carbine had a blue finish with a bright bolt. The left side of the receiver is marked with the three line address/1860 to 1877 patent dates and the serial number is marked on the top edge of the receiver. The left rear of the barrel is marked with a "V/P/eagle head" proof marks and an "R" on top. A small "HN" inspectors mark is near the proofs and on two places on the bolt. Blade front and adjustable "ski slope" rear sight graduated from 7 to 14. The top of the left arm is marked with a "HC". The safety is located on the top left rear of the receiver and the magazine cut-off on the right side. Mounted with a smooth one-piece straight grip half stock with a single barrel band, brass forend, saddle ring with swiveling stud on the left side and steel carbine buttplate. Directly behind the trigger guard is a circled script "P" and there is a boxed "SWP/1881" cartouche on the left heel area.

ConditionVery good. The barrel has a smooth brownish patina. The receiver has a smooth brownish gray patina. The trigger guard and buttplate have flashes of original blue finish with a smooth dark patina and the buttplate has a mottled gray patina with some minor pitting on the heel. The stock is also very good with a fine cartouche, a few minor dings and dents. The markings are clear. The action is excellent.
