Manufactured in 1873, the first year of production and part of Lot 1, first shipment of 1000 SAA revolvers to the U.S. Government (This first shipment went to Leavenworth, Kansas for the Tenth Cavalry). This U.S. Cavalry Colt revolver features the standard blade front and notch rear sights. The top of the barrel is marked with the early slant letter "+ COLT'S PT. F. A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A+." with the two line, two patent date marking on the left side of the frame followed by "U.S.". The bottom of the barrel is marked with a small "P" and "A" just ahead of the cylinder pin. There is a "P" and "A" on the cylinder, an "A" top of the top of the back strap and just below the serial number on the trigger guard. There is a "C" marked in the hammer well. The bottom of the frame and trigger guard are numbered "948" and the bottom of the barrel, the cylinder and back strap are numbered "943". (This revolver has been together since period of usage!) The ejector rod head is the correct early "bulls eye" or donut style with the hole in the center. It is fitted with smooth one piece walnut grip. Complete with a period modified "US" M1881/85 embossed leather flap holster and canvas cartridge prairie belt.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The metal surfaces have a smooth grayish brown patina. There are a number of minor dings on and around the cylinder pin. The grip is good with a minor chip on each toe, some heavy wear on the lower edges and some dents and dings. The markings are clear. The action is fine. The holster is good with some heavy flex cracking on the flap, as well as some wear on the edges. The holster shows some minor to moderate cracking. The belt is good with stains and moderate to heavy wear on the buckle strap.
