Description:

This is a very fine example of a very early "two-digit" serial number (91) cased, complete Ludwig Loewe & Co., Model 1893 Borchardt pistol that includes the original black leather carrying case, and full complement of accessories with four matching magazines. This specific pistol was from the Sid Aberman collection and is probably the earliest known Borchardt in the U.S. Mr. Aberman was a very well known, highly advanced collector of early automatic pistols, that had to be in exceptional condition or he didn't own them. The chamber area of the barrel extension is marked in three lines "WAFFENFABRIK/LOEWE/BERLIN" and the right side of the receiver is marked "SYSTEM BORCHARDT PATENT.". The top of the toggle link is stamped "N.R.P./No. 75837". The pistol serial number "91" is visible on the stock lug, the bottom of the pistol grip, the left side of the trigger, the left side of the toggle link, the rear underside of the barrel, the side of the stock and on the base of all four magazines. The lower edge of the detachable stock and the dummy magazine are marked "GESETZLICH GESCHUTZT", literal translation, "LAW PROTECTED", meaning protected under patent law. The left side of the barrel has the standard "Crown over B, U and G" proofs, while the left front edge of the barrel extension, the left side of the breechblock and toggle assembly have the standard Crown over the "B and U" acceptance proofs. As noted this is a complete Borchardt cased set with four matching nickel-plated wooden base magazines (one for the pistol with three spares), a wooden dummy magazine with brass oiler on the bottom, detachable wooden stock with cheekpiece, black leather holster attached to the stock, black leather sling, brass cleaning rod, detachable screw driver blades, wooden handle for cleaning rod and screw drivers, two steel punches, round silver plated brass oil can, 2 early small tins of Vaseline (lubrication) that are marked made by the Carl Abermann & Co. Frankfurt" and an original and very rare French version of an original DWM manual for this rare pistol. The luggage-type case is covered with black leather and has a nickel plated oval name plate in the center of the lid and nickel-plated fittings. The case interior is lined with green velvet and divided into eight compartments.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 98% plus of the original blue finish overall. There is a spot of pitting present under the blue on the left side of the spring casing. The balance of the blue finish is solid and shows only very minor edge wear, the grips are both in excellent condition with nice distinct checkering on both sides with minimal handling marks overall. The walnut shoulder stock and cheekpiece are both in excellent condition showing only minor handling marks overall. The leather holster on the stock is in very fine condition with half of the fragile black leather finish remaining. The magazines and internal metal parts are all in excellent original condition. The black leather carrying case is in fine condition overall, with complete and intact hinges and locks, all the internal compartment dividers are complete and solid. The outside of the case itself shows half of the brown leather surface still intact with the balance having lost the brown surface. Certainly one of the best of the very rare and highly desirable early Borchardt rigs available.
