Collector's Lot of Two Smith & Wesson First Model First Issue Revolvers

A) Smith & Wesson First Model First Issue 5th Type Revolver

Introduced in 1857 the First Model was manufactured in various forms through 1881 with this being an example of a First Issue 5th Type (rifling changed from three grooves to five). The top of the barrel rib is marked with the one line address with 7-shot non-fluted cylinder and grips numbered to the gun.

ConditionVery good. The barrel and cylinder have a mottled brown patina showing some scattered minor pitting. The frame retains 97% original silver plating. The hammer has been polished bright. The grips are very good with a crack on the right panel and some minor handling marks. Action does not work as cylinder does not rotate when action is cycled.

B) Smith & Wesson First Model First Issue 6th Type Revolver

This is an example of a 6th Type, the last First Issue variation (rotating recoil device eliminated and instead a ratchet was made integral part of the cylinder). The top of the barrel rib is marked with the one line address and the patent date is stamped on the 7-shot non-fluted cylinder. The right grip panel is numbered to the gun.

ConditionVery good. The barrel and cylinder have a mottled brown patina showing some minor pitting (mostly on the cylinder). The frame retains 80% original silver plating. The grips are very fine with a small surface chip missing from the left panel and some scattered minor handling marks. Mechanically fine.
