Description:

This is an example of a U.S. Springfield Armory WWII M1C rifle that has been fitted with a late Korean War, type 1, 4X Kollmorgen scope as issued by the USMC. When issued by the USMC these rifles were designated as a MC1 sniper rifle. The rifle was overhauled during the Korean Conflict and has a post-WWII, sight, set with a relieved "D35382 SA" marked operating rod, with a replacement barrel stamped "S A 11-52". The rifle has an original type telescopic sight base fitted to the receiver that is stamped on the side with the serial number "351/6165" between the base screws. As noted this rifle has been fitted with the later type 1 Kollmorgen scope and larger Griffin & Howe scope mount which were developed and issued only by the USMC, based on the inadequacies of the M84 scope. This scope has the standard cross-hair type reticle and is marked on top of the tube: "MC 1011-P" and the rear eyepiece is marked "4X DOUBLE STITH MOUNTS S.A. TEX./KOLLMORGEN CORP. BROOKLYN NY." The stock is stamped with a encircled "P" firing proof on the inside of the pistol grip but has no re-build or final inspection stamps and has been fitted with a milled "SA" marked M2 Flash Hider, a GI canvas sling and leather, lace-on cheekpiece stamped, "MRT/8-51" on the right side. Nearly all of the M1C sniper rifles were rebuilt by Springfield Armory or other Ordnance facilities during the Korean Conflict and they remained in services until the start of the Vietnam War. Most of the M1C rifles were destroyed by the Army during the 1980s and only a few hundred M1C rifles were released to the public by the CMP or Title 10 exchange programs. This rifle does not have any CMP papers, however it is accompanied by a letter from David McClain a noted expert on M1C sniper rifles, and he states that this rifle receiver was originally manufactured as an authentic M1C sniper rifle receiver during WWII, but does not validate the current configuration.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as arsenal refurbished/rebuilt with 98% of the late gray arsenal parkerized finish remaining with some light pitting on the front end of the receiver, lower receiver legs and under side of the flats under the stock line. The breech end of the barrel remains in the white and the markings are clear and sharp. The larger G&H scope mount is in excellent condition with 98% of the original dark green parkerized finish and USMC marked scope is also in excellent condition with 95% of the original black baked on finish showing only minor edge wear. The optics are clear and sharp and the windage and elevation knobs work correctly. The stock and hand guards are all in excellent condition, with a nice medium brown color overall with minimal handling marks. A very nice looking complete, and verified M1C sniper rifle with the desirable USMC type 1 Kollmorgen scope.
