This Winchester Model 1886 Deluxe Express Rifle is accompanied with a Cody Firearms Museum factory letter that verifies the rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on August 13, 1890. The letter describes the rifle as caliber 50/110, with half-octagon barrel, plain trigger, checkered stock, pistol grip, sporting rear sight and half-magazine. The rifle has a color casehardened frame, forearm cap, hammer, lever and shotgun buttplate. The 26-inch half-round/half-octagon barrel and half magazine, bolt and loading gate are blued. The forearm and pistol grip stock are highly figured, fancy grade walnut with "Style H" checkering. The stock has a shotgun buttplate and ebony inlay on the pistol grip. The barrel has a Lyman "Hunting Front Sight" with colored insert and a sporting rear sight with serrated edges and sliding insert. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "- MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation "50 EX" is roll-stamped on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the frame. The upper tang is roll-stamped "-MODEL 1886-". The lower tang is stamped with the 1884 and 1885 patent dates in two lines behind the trigger. The serial number, "47854" is stamped in script letters behind the rear tang screw.

Extremely fine. The rifle retains 75% of the original blue and 60% color casehardened finish. The blue finish on the round portion of the barrel is thin and there is light edge wear on the octagon portion of the barrel. The bolt retains nearly all of the deep blue finish. The blue on the loading gate has faded. The casehardened finish on the forearm cap, frame, hammer and loading lever are fading to silver. Considerable case colors remain on the top and sides of the frame and the sides of the hammer and lever. The case colors on the buttplate have faded to a gray patina. The markings on the barrel and frame are sharp. The stock and forearm are both in very fine condition and show minimal handling wear. The checkering has been professionally re-cut and the stock and forearm have been carefully reoiled. This is a very fine example of a scarce and very desirable Winchester Model 1886 Deluxe .50/110 Express rifle.
