U.S. Springfield Model 1816 Percussion Hewes & Phillips 1861 Conversion Musket

Brass blade front sight mounted on the front strap of the front barrel band with a square bayonet lug on the muzzle. "Eagle/US" marked ahead of the hammer on the lock, "SPRING/FIELD/1830" at the rear, the top of the barrel is marked "H&P", the tang is dated "1861", the left rear of the barrel has a recessed "P" and the flat is marked "NJ", (the marking appears to be not of period). Three leaf rear sight with an upside-down "17" stamped on the left side and mounted with a full walnut stock with an oval "E?" and "A/2" cartouche on the left flat, "13" and "20" stamped on the comb ahead of the buttplate tang and "US" on the tang. With a button head iron ramrod.

ConditionVery fine. The barrel and trigger guard retain 75% plus Arsenal brown finish. The vanish has turned brown and almost all remains. The lock and hammer have a mottled brownish gray patina. The barrel tang screw is absent. The stock is excellent with crisp flats, sharp cartouches, raised feathered grain, a few minor nicks on the edges of the flats and overall some scattered minor dents. A period field applied "JA" has been carved into the right side of the wrist. The action is excellent.
