U.S. Civil War Era Whitney Model 1861 Rifle-Musket with New Jersey Militia Markings

This is an example of one of 15,000 Model 1861 Rifle-Muskets that Whitney delivered to the U.S. government. The lock is dated "1863" behind the hammer and the eagle and panoply of flags ahead of the hammer with "U.S./WHITNEY-VILLE" under the bolster. The top of the barrel is dated "1864", the left upper flat is marked with the "V/P/Eagle head" proofs and the left flat is marked "N.J". Blade front sight which doubles as a bayonet lug and three leaf rear sight. Full black walnut stock with three barrel bands, oval "N.J" cartouche on the left flat, small round brass disk marked "516" behind the lower tang and iron buttplate marked "US" on the tang. Complete with an original trumpet head ramrod.

ConditionFine. The metal surfaces have a crisp smooth mottled gray patina with some minor oxidation on the lower tang. The stock is fine with a legible cartouche, a few minor gouges, dents and scratches. The markings are clear. The action is excellent.
