Scarce Civil War Greene Underhammer Bolt Action Rifle

Manufactured by A.H. Waters Armory circa 1859 to early 1860s with a total quantity around 1,500 U.S. plus 3,000 Russian contract (writer believes this to be of the latter contract). It has the distinction of being the first bolt action rifle purchased by the U.S. government (900 were bought). Although the bore appears smooth, it actually has a type of rifling invented by Charles Lancaster, a London Gunmaker. Marked "GREENE'S PATENT/NOV. 17 1857." on the upper tang. Bayonet lug/blade front sight, stepped rear sight is graduated 5 through 8 on the folding leaf, three barrel bands, cleaning rod and buttplate with trapdoor for cleaning brush aperture, (not included).

ConditionVery good. The rifle retains 30% original blue finish mixed with brown patina. The muzzle end of the barrel and around the percussion nipple show heavy pitting. There are several minor dings on the barrel and lower tang, as well as some scattered minor oxidation on the barrel. The stock is about good with an old repaired break on the wrist. In the same area the stock has been slightly modified. Overall there are scattered minor dents and scratches, and the stock remains solid. Mechanically fine.
