Description:

Manufactured in 1857, this is an example of a scarce Colt Model 1851 Navy Revolver that was purchased by the U.S. Army prior to the Civil War. These U.S. Model 1851s were primarily issued to the 1st and 2nd Cavalry Regiments and were used extensively in campaigns against hostile Indians prior to the Civil War, and are found in the 42,000-80,000 serial number range. The top barrel flat is stamped with the one line New York City address with a replacement blade front sight. The left side of the frame is marked "COLTS/PATENT/US" and the cylinder has the navy scene with "COLTS PATENT No 70180". The left side of the trigger guard has the small letters "K" and "M" with the letter "C" marked on the grip straps and "T" on the cylinder. The revolver has matching numbers. Fitted with a one piece grip featuring traces of a cartouche on each side.

Rating Definition:

Good as period refinished showing an even, crisp blue brown patina overall. Much of the cylinder scene remains. The brass has an even patina. The revarnished grip has a few scattered minor handling marks and a small chip missing near the frame. Mechanically fine.
