A) Scarce DWM Model 1923 "A.F. Stoeger" Marked "Safe and Loaded" Three-Barrel Commercial Luger Pistol Set

Manufacturer: DWM
Model: 1923
Type: Pistol
Gauge: 7.65 mm Luger
Barrel: 3 7/8 inch round
Finish: blue
Grip: walnut checkered
Stock:
Item Views: 19718
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 168
Class: Curio & Relic Handgun
Description:

As noted the first pistol in this set, is a scarce DWM model 1923 Commercial "SAFE and LOADED" marked Luger pistol. The Luger is correctly marked on the right side of the barrel extension in two lines with the legend "A.F. STOEGER INC./NEW YORK ." and is marked on the front toggle with the DWM monogram. The chamber area is marked with the prominent American Eagle crest, and has the commercial "Crown/N" proof on the left side of the barrel extension, breechblock, and underside of the barrel. As noted it is marked with "SAFE AND LOADED" in the safety area and again on the extractor. This Luger is accompanied with a separate/additional barrel and barrel extension, ( no additional breechblock or toggle assembly) correctly serial numbered (10) on the underside in front of the lug to this pistol and which also carries the same American Eagle crest on the chamber area and "A.F. Stoeger" markings. This barrel/extension is also chambered in the 7,65mm Luger cartridge only the barrel is the earlier 4 7/8 inch fast tapered version. The front of the frame and right side of both barrel extensions are marked "GERMANY" indicating sales outside of Europe. This specific pistol is complete with one matching nickel plated wood base magazine, numbered "1110". In addition to these two barrel sets, this specific Luger is accompanied by a third long heavy barreled extension assembly (with modified breech block and toggle assembly) chambered in "22 LR". This third barrel/barrel extension is actually 10 1/4 inches long and is of a heavier, almost bull barrel configuration that has a raised ramp front base with three interchangeable front sights, (two blade type and one globe type target type) with a raised flat rear base mounted on the barrel. This assembly is accompanied by a special target type, fully adjustable rear sight that fits on this base that is adjustable for windage and elevation and is marked on the side of the base, "D.R.G.M.". As noted the breechblock has been modified to have a dual-firing pin with a modified breech face. Due to the weight of this barrel, this assembly probably functioned in a single-shot manner only, as there is no accompanying magazine designed for the 22 cartridge. The barrel/barrel extension is unmarked except for the serial number "1110" stamped on the underside of the extension in front of the recoil lug. This specific Luger is probably the primary pistol in this set, as the lid to the display case is stamped with this pistols serial number (1110) along with the "STOEGER" markings. This is an exceptionally rare and certainly a one-of-a-kind, A.F. Stoeger Luger salesman sample/display case. This would absolutely be the center piece of any high end European, Automatic or Luger pistol collection.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 99% of the original blue finish with minor edge and high spot wear overall with 80% of the straw colors on the small parts. The grips are excellent with nice sharp checkering on both sides. Both of the extra barrel/barrel extensions also retain 99% of their original blue finish. These have matching numbers on the various parts.

Description:

This is the second pistol in this wonderful cased A. F. Stoeger salesman display case, is also a DWM 1920 "American Eagle" Commercial Luger, that is complete with two separate barrel/barrel assemblies. As noted this Luger also has the prominent "American Eagle" crest on top of the chamber area of both barrel/barrel extensions and both are correctly marked on the right side with a two-line "A. F. STOEGER INC./NEW YORK" markings and "GERMANY" indicating export outside of Europe. The underside of both barrels, the left side of the barrel extensions and breechblock are correctly marked with a single "Crown/N", proof mark and both barrels are serial numbered on their undersides with number "5500u". The second barrel is also chambered in 9mm, same as the first one, only in the shorter 3 7/8 inch length. This complete Luger pistol and additional barrel assembly, unlike the first Luger, has a separate breech block and toggle assembly for each barrel. This Luger is complete with one unmarked wood base nickel plated magazine.

Rating Definition:

Excellent overall, with 99% of the DWM commercial blue finish, with wear on the edges and high spots. The various small parts retain 98% of their straw colors and the grips are also excellent.

The third pistol is this set is a one-of-a-kind Walther Olympia Model Hammerless Target Pistol fitted with a set of checkered one-piece wrap-around walnut grips, with a stock lug on the back grip strap. The serial number, "3809", is stamped on the right side of the barrel just ahead of the chamber. Commercial, "Crown/N" proof marks are stamped on the right side of the slide, barrel and chamber area. The right side of the ten-round magazine is numbered "9". The Walther Olympia Models were the most advanced and accurate .22 target pistol of the pre-war period. Walther Hammerless Target .22 LR pistols were imported and sold in the United States by the A.F. Stoeger Company. Also included in this fabulous lot are two spare nickel plated wooden base magazines, a Zeiss scope that can be attached to the Walther Sport Model pistol (only and not the Lugers), and a small brass tin that holds several of the additional replaceable front sights for the 22 LR barrel. As noted and shown everything is contained in a 15 1/2 X 19 inch walnut display case that has green fitted lining for all three pistols and the various accessories and components. What a fabulous complete and certainly one of a kind salesman/display set.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 98% of the rust blue finish overall with wear on the edges and high spots. The various small parts retain 95% of their straw colors. The grip is also excellent with minor wear and handling marks. The carbine stock and Zeiss scope are both excellent. The walnut presentation case is very fine overall with the outside showing scratches, pressure dents and some gouges from years of carrying, handling and general use and display, with all the hinges, front locks, corners and sides intact. Just a superb example of a super rare display/salesman case.
