Early Model 1941 Johnson Semi-Automatic Rifle with Original Bayonet and Scabbard

This is a solid example of a Model 1941 Johnson semi-automatic Rifle as manufactured by the Cranston Arms Company. These rifles were developed in the late 1930s intending to compete against the M1 Garand for US military contracts. These rifles were not adopted by the US Army with some being subsequently sold to the Netherlands with several thousand also being sold and issued by the USMC in the early island hopping campaigns in the Pacific in 1942 and 1943. These rifles have a unique 10 round rotary magazine which allowed them to be reloaded at any time, (a major failing of the M1), a recoiling barrel which started the cycling of the rifle and the takedown barrel which allowed them to be stored in a parachute jump bag for the Para Marines. They also have two unique features, which are a two-piece walnut stock, and a perforated steel receiver extension that acts as a barrel heat shield. The top of the receiver is marked with the Johnson patent numbers in five lines followed by "CAL. 30-06-SEMI-AUTO/"JOHNSON AUTOMATICS"/MODEL OF 1941/MADE IN PROVIDENCE, R.I., U.S.A." over the serial number "5590". The right rear side of the receiver is stamped with a five-pointed star above "CRANSTON/ARMS/CO." in an inverted triangle. The receiver is fitted with tangent rear sight and is correctly graduated in meters. The barrel is marked ".30-06/41" on the front face of the collar and "J.A./30-06" over the rear of the barrel with the serial number "9249F" stamped on the underside directly in front of the barrel extension. It is complete with an original Johnson bayonet with original leather scabbard that is stamped "4213".

ConditionVery fine as arsenal refurbished with 95% of a dipped blue type finish with wear and finish loss on the edges and high spots as well as the exposed section of the barrel. The two-piece stock is very good overall with minor handling marks and minor nicks in various places with a nice dark oil finish. The bayonet and scabbard are both excellent. A very nice example of an early Model 1941 Johnson semi-automatic rifle.
