Description:

Designed by Captain John H. Hall, the Model 1819 and was the U.S. Army's first breech loading long arm, as well as the first arm with fully interchangeable parts. These rifles were used primarily during the Black Hawk, Seminole and Mexican Wars; with a small quantity of rifles converted to percussion, along with the regulation 1836 model, were issued during the opening months of the Civil War. This is a third type Hall flintlock Rifle with "1838" dated breechblock. The breechblock is marked "J.H. HALL/H. FERRY/US/1838" in four lines with the front sight blade and rear sight notch, properly offset to the left. The breech catch is the proper "trigger" design with the extended pistol grip trigger guard. The lock, hammer and frizzen are casehardened and the barrel, receiver and furniture have the original Armory Brown finish and the stock is oil-finished walnut.

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus as issued with 98% of the original Armory Brown finish still remaining with wear on the edges and high spots with a slight wear ring on the muzzle where a bayonet was once attached. The wood is also excellent plus, crisp overall with only very minor handling marks. An extraordinary example of a U.S. Harpers Ferry Hall Model 1819!
