Smith & Wesson New Model No 3 Single Action Revolver Owned by Western Movie Actor William Hart

This revolver was once owned by the famous early 1900s cowboy and Western movie star William S. Hart. In December of 1930 Hart gave the revolver to a Louis Tepper. Mr. Tepper owned one or more movie theaters in the Newark, New Jersey area and had a strong admiration for Hart and would show his movies as often as he could, even earlier films. In appreciation for this Hart gifted the revolver to Tepper. The revolver was shipped to Tepper in a wooden crate via American Railway Express Company and at one time the crate was still with the revolver. Accompanying the revolver is a copy of a 1975 Smith & wesson Collectors News with an article about Hart giving the revolver to Tepper, showing the letter Hart sent to Tepper and a photo of the revolver and crate it was shipped in. The letter explains the reason for the notches in the left grip panel. Also with the revolver is a framed movie advertisement for the film Hart carried this revolver in, which was titled "3 Word Brand". There is also a copy of the page from Douglas R. Carlson Antique American Firearms dated 12/01/83 with the description of this revolver when it was for sale at the Las Vegas Gun Show when it was purchased by John Gangel. The revolver is a standard New Model No. 3 with the two line address/patent dates on top of the rib, and the matching serial number on the butt, cylinder, barrel and barrel latch. Blade front and notch rear sights, blue finish with casehardened hammer and trigger guard, and fitted with checkered walnut grips.

ConditionFine. The revolver retains 40% original blue finish mainly concentrated on the frame sides and bottom, with a smooth gray patina on the balance. The hammer retains much of the original case colors and the trigger guard has a smooth silver gray patina. The grips are good with the aforementioned notches on the left panel, two horizontal over the screw and four vertical at the bottom. The grips show some heavy wear and a few minor dings. The barrel marking is crisp and clear. The action is fine. A solid Smith & Wesson New No. 3 revolver once owned by the famous Western movie actor William Hart.
