Description:

This is an exceptional example of an experimental, (preproduction set-up examples), Union Switch & Signal 1911A1 pistol. Approximately 100 of these pistols were manufactured prior to full production to set up and try out the manufacturing equipment that was to be used in the production of the contract pistols. The pistol is accompanied by a letter from Charles W. Clawson outlining the chain of ownership of this pistol, as well as listing 11 "EXP" pistols by number, listing the owner, (if known) and type of finish. This pistol is one of the eleven and it states "Charles W. Clawson, buffed and blued". Two are marked "No information". The letter states that the finish on the EXP pistols is inconsistent with some blued but not buffed, buffed and blued and blued over sand blasted surface, (parkerized appearance). "The receivers are original preproduction set-up examples, but were later assembled with slides and parts from prevailing production. Some components may be transfer parts from other pistol contractors." The left side of the slide is marked with the US&S" logo followed by the two line address and the right side of the frame is marked "US & S CO/EXP No 81". There are correctly no other visible markings. The pistol has a polished blue finish with a matte finish on top of the slide. Standard low profile fixed sights, blue unmarked magazine, lanyard loop on the heel and fitted with checkered plastic grips.

Rating Definition:

Near mint. The pistol retains 98% plus blue finish with some minor edge wear and some thinning on the front strap and grip safety. The grips are excellent with a couple light handling marks and sharp checkering. The markings are clear. Mechanically excellent.
